Exercise and College Students: How Regular Exercise Contributes to Approach Motivation via Self-Efficacy

I used an experimental design with 2 treatment and 2 control groups. The treatment groups included college students that had never previously exercised. They were instructed to walk briskly for 30 minutes per day, 4 times per week, for 8 weeks. One group was instructed to do this indoors, the other outdoors (to measure the influence of outdoor context). Results indicated significant main effects for the treatment groups for improvements on self-efficacy and global approach motivation.

A process model was theorized and had partial support from this study.  It appears that as one regularly exercises (even just walking briskly!) and experiences increases in exercise self-efficacy, one also experiences improvements in exercise-approach motivation (for some), general self-efficacy, and finally global approach motivation.

A simple walking regimen for 8 weeks resulted in significant increases in general self-efficacy and global approach motivation tendencies for a group of college students. How exciting!
